After two years of dedication, the dream of having a child and building a family of our own was realized on December 26, 2012 at 11:01 am. The arrival of our first child, Mila Mei Fugunt, was a triumph of perseverance for us both.
When we began trying to conceive more than two years before her birth, the task seemed enormous. The options were few and even more discouraging was the cost of these procedures. After trying nearly every method from vibrators, to prostate milking and even in vitro via testicular biopsy, we were invited to "The Miami Project To Cure Paralysis" for a clinical trial that used an electroejaculation method borrowed from animal husbandry. The results of the trial for me were outstanding and I was able to ejaculate a normal healthy sperm and semen amount on demand. From this breakthrough, I began the task of finding an at-home solution so we could have the option for multiple attempts of conception during ovulation times and the potential to have additional children.
I first found a small battery operated ejaculator used for goats, but it didn't have the voltage output required for me to ejaculate. The voltage required for me was around 6-8 volts. This small battery machine only produced about 3 volts and simply was not up to the task. After this setback, I came across an almost identical machine to the one used in Miami that I could use in the privacy of my own home. This was a fraction of the cost compared to fertility clinics or other sperm extraction methods I had tried. The particular machine I used was the Beltron AC-1. The machine was easy for me use and had the options that I wanted, such as the option to select 12 volt or 24 volt power and a 120v AC power supply that avoided batteries. The ability to use interchangeable probes was great since when inserting this into your rectum, size does matter (the appropriate size for me was a goat probe). In all, this was a perfect solution for at home insemination on demand. After acquiring my own machine and applying the techniques that I learned from Miami, I successfully inseminated my wife on her next ovulation with no complications. This was the first recorded case of an at home insemination using this method.
We used the the same method to conceive our second child, a son - Wolfgang Tiberius, born on February 5, 2014 and our third child, another son almost 5 years later - Weston Reinhardt, born on November 16, 2018. And although the obstacles to having a family were overcome with our experiment and the birth of our first child, Mila - the birth of our second child, Wolfgang and third child, Weston created entirely new dynamics of fulfillment within our family unit. A family we thought not possible after my spinal cord injury, is now my honor to have and to hold.
